Atlanta Local Gift Guide #2 – Locally Created Jewelry and Visual Art

Posted by Cracker on December 8th, 2009

Welcome to Part #2 in Arepas and Gravy’s series on where to buy local holiday gifts in the grand city of Atlanta (and surrounding bergs.) Who says decent jewelry has to come in a little blue box? Or that all fine art is created in Paris? Me, that’s who. You don’t have to leave Atlanta to buy for the art lover on your list.

2.) Jewelry from a Local Artisan – Google your location +”jewelry maker” or head out to an arts and crafts fair to find these folks. They often sell their wares in local boutiques, as well. Locally made jewelry will often be unique, too! Don’t confine yourself to jewelry. Nip into an art gallery the next time you’re downtown and find out who your local painters, sculptors and woodworkers are, too.

Margot Townsend – A local jewelry-maker with an outstanding pedigree. She was a jewelry buyer for Neiman Marcus and has supplied museums with replica pieces. Plus, my good friend and the writer of the Princess Blog recently filled a bag at one of her sales for $30. Can’t beat that with a diamond-studded stick.

jacQueline Sanchez – I came across this jewelry-maker when I was compiling a list of local artisans a couple of years ago, and she always stuck out in my mind. She has a collection of puzzle piece bracelets that appeal to my inner geek, though there is nothing geeky about her talent. Does anybody on your list love Legos? I’m just sayin’

Key’s Jewelry – Why I have no idea where their jewelry is sourced, this hometown jewelry store has anchored Downtown Canton for over 50 years. What started as a watch and clock repair shop now has all the jewelry you (or mom, or grandma or heck, dad, could possibly desire.)

Quick, quick, Groupon’s deal of the day for December 10th, 2009 is $140 worth of handmade jewelry from Mickey Lynn for $60. Hurry because Groupons always disappear fast and expire at the end of the day!

Visual Art

Sister Louisa – Sister Louisa (otherwise known as Grant Henry) is anything by reverent when he repurposes wonderful old religious and Americana-style paintings. Not for the easily offended.

The Coffee Shop Wall – I love coffee shop wall art. It’s also insanely easy to shop for. Go to the coffee shop. Look at art. Ask where you can buy art. Call artist. Buy art. (I didn’t say actually buying the art was easy. I said it was easy to shop for.)

Okay, I’ve made my 5 recommendations. Hit me with some more fab local artists and jewelry makers!
